10 moments in relations between United States, North Korea

The quick succession of combative G7 meetings and his arrival in Singapore for a summit with North Korea's dictator set up a striking contrast best captured by a pair of tweets Trump issued after leaving Canada in which he slammed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as "very dishonest & weak" and reneged on USA plans to sign a joint communique with the G7 leaders.

It was also Chung and Suh who relayed to Trump Kim's wishes to meet and to discuss denuclearization.

The streets were lined with press and onlookers with cell phones as Trump's motorcade made its way from his hotel.

Pyongyang has said it is willing to deal away its entire nuclear arsenal if the United States provides it with a reliable security assurance and other benefits.

Rather than bandy the term about, negotiators in Trump's administration should seek to obtain a commitment in writing that North Korea will abandon all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programs, Cha continued. After leaving Canada, Trump called Trudeau "dishonest" and "weak" on Twitter.

Information regarding the meeting was kept from the public until it was over, and its results were revealed by Moon on the following day.

Kim told Lee: "The entire world is watching the historic summit between the DPRK and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparation for the historic summit".

Alluding to the North's concerns that giving up its nuclear weapons could surrender its primary deterrent to forced regime change, Pompeo told reporters that the USA was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with "sufficient certainty" that denuclearization "is not something that ends badly for them".

"One of my worries is that we come out of this Singapore summit with something that looks remarkably like the Six Party Talks or anything that the president has previously criticised but it is hyped as something that's historic and new and groundbreaking", he added. "To all Americans and the rest of the world I'm honored to call President Trump a friend", he said.

"He expressed deep thanks to the Singaporean government for its honest cooperation of providing all conditions and best conveniences for the historic DPRK-U.S. summit meeting and talks", the KCNA said.

A jet carrying Kim landed hours earlier.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien-loong on Sunday as he visited the city-state for his historic summit with U.S. President Donald Trump this week. Instead, the meet will set the ball rolling for a long dialogue between the two nuclear powers.

Kim and Trump arrived in tropical Singapore on Sunday for the first ever face-to-face meeting by leaders of two countries that have been enemies since the 1950-1953 Korean War. There was also no sign of his sister, Kim Yo Jong, who has accompanied him to Singapore.

The summit has raised hopes of progress towards a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War, the last festering legacy of the Cold War, after hostilities only stopped with an armistice.
