AMD teases 32-core chip at Computex 2018

AMD just did Intel one better at Computex. The top specced Threadripper CPU will feature double the number of cores and threads to last year's Threadripper 1950X. The new 32-core processor fits into the current SP3 socket with your existing X399 motherboard, likely accompanied by a firmware update.

The 7nm Vega GPUs will be available in both server and workstation form factors in the second half of 2018. "Computing is absolutely everywhere".

The new Threadripper CPUs will launch in Q3 this year.

The new processors will feature chips with up to 32 physical cores and 64 threads, and are based on the company's 12nm architecture.

AMD has clearly had a success story with its Ryzen chips, and Anderson touted a few examples. AMD tossing its hat into the ring with a 32-core chip seems to set up an nearly inevitable clash-of-the-titans situation.

AMD beats Intel to the punch after Ryzen line cutting deep into Intel's near-monopolistic majority with reveal of Threadripper 2 aimed at the high end PC gaming market. AMD also said it was sampling a 7nm Vega Instinct GPU designed for graphics cards with 32GB of expensive HBM2 memory rather than GDDR5X or GDDR6.

The company's computing and graphics revenue jumped 95 percent from the same time previous year.

In April, AMD reported first-quarter net income of $81 million on revenue of $1.65 billion, up 40 percent from a year ago.

Unfortunately, most of AMD's graphics presentation was highlighting the past, present and future contributions of partners.

Also to make a name for itself is the Radeon RX Vega 56 which was unveiled by AMD in collaboration with PowerColor.

"We took that data directly from GlobalFoundries and TSMC", David Wang, senior VP of engineering at RTG, says at a post-conference event. Wang's message implicitly rebutted Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, who had told attendees that a new graphics architecture wouldn't arrive for a very long time.

AMD unveils seven new Ryzen PRO APUs, three for mobile space and four for the desktop, for the commercial users.

AMD shares rose 5%, near 15.60, in afternoon trading on the stock market today. It will be optimized for workstations and datacenters. AMD continues to leverage the open source community for its Radeon Open Ecosystem (ROCm) software solutions, which stands in stark contrast to other vendors' proprietary software, like CUDA. AMD releases a slew of new CPU and GPU options for client compute uses and gaming.
