Argentina’s Lanzini ruled out of World Cup

Lanzini dropped out of Argentina's World Cup squad on Friday after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Breaking news coming out of Barcelona as Manuel Lanzini is out of the World Cup for Argentina.

Lanzini was in contention for a starting spot in Russian Federation until he sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a training session this week.

The attacking midfielder caught Sampaoli's eye with five goals in 29 appearances for West Ham last season.

West Ham fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment at the news and with their superstar well in his recovery from a nasty injury.

The 25-year old was set to play a crucial role for Argentina in the World Cup this summer.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has said Argentina are well prepared for the World Cup and highlighted their individual quality as key.

Argentina will play their opening fixture against Iceland on June 16.

Inter Milan captain and striker Mauro Icardi is expected to be called up as Lanzini's replacement.

A ruptured ACL is one of the worst injuries an athlete can have and Lanzini could miss the first few games for West Ham.

Jorge Sampaoli chose to pick Lanzini ahead of Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi, who scored 29 goals in Serie A last season.
