Boston Celtics: Where the franchise stands heading into the 2018 offseason

Meeting with Boston reporters for the first time since March to cap a day spent promoting his "Uncle Drew" movie, Irving said it "sucked" to be sidelined for the postseason, glowed about Boston's future potential, acknowledged the challenge of competing with the Golden State Warriors and said he would leave roster decisions to management when asked about the possibility - no matter how remote - of being reunited with potential free agent LeBron James. Until I get to that point, then I can't really answer any questions.

"The focus is exclusively on winning a championship next year", Irving said. "I think that our starting five probably could have changed game-to-game, based on the guys we have on this team and the length". He was a key part of the Cleveland Cavaliers Championship run during the 2015-2016 season, hitting the game winning three pointer over Stephen Curry in Game 7 of a series they were down three games to one.

Boston reached the Eastern Conference Finals, despite not having either Irving or Hayward to call upon in the playoffs.

"I would just say the consistency, the authenticity, and honesty, from everything that we're doing as a team and an organization", Irving said. "I'd been talking about how great they were, some of their numbers particularly probably didn't look as appealing to the outside looker, but they were always locked in".

Kyrie Irving, like many other stars, relishes the bright lights that Madison Square Garden can bring to his career, as the mecca of basketball - but the Knicks' best chances are to avoid negotiations with Ainge and choose the straight path, making Irving a substantial offer he can't refuse.

"If you're faced with losing him for nothing, they should take Gordon Hayward".

Jaylen Brown's rookie season didn't go as many had hoped for with the Boston Celtics. "You saw guys that literally are going to be stars in this league for years to come".

When he referenced Hayward, Irving smiled wide and added, "and now getting my man Gordon back - I'm excited man". This is where general manager Danny Ainge would have to strip himself off all attachments to the marquee players on his roster as he did in sending Isaiah Thomas to the Cavaliers last offseason.

Unfortunately for Boston, the injury bug would strike again as Irving would be lost for the rest of the season on March 11. "Yeah, I just have to take it as being present with the Boston Celtics", said Irving. "When all that stuff at that time comes, we'll see what happens".
