However, an injury doubt over Swiss-based Tomi Juric resulted in Maclaren being given a last-minute call, winning his sixth cap as a second-half substitute as the Aussies crushed the Czech Republic 4-0 on Friday.

The totemic forward made the cut along with 32-year-old defensive midfielder Mark Milligan, who is also included in the Socceroos squad for a fourth successive tournament even if he never got on to the pitch in Germany in 2006.

"Every step of the selection process has been hard because the players have all given everything to make the final selection", van Marwijk said.

Socceroos coach Bert van Marwijk acknowledged emotions were running high as he cut Australia's squad at the FIFA World Cup from 27 players to 23.

Jamie Maclaren's World Cup dream will finally be realised after months of torment as he was named in the Australian squad which will face France, Denmark and Peru in Russian Federation later this month.

Croatian-born defender Fran Karacic, utility Josh Brillante and attacker Nikita Rukavytsya were also omitted from the Socceroos training group, with surprise call-up Jamie Maclaren securing a seat on the plane to Russian Federation in the wake of Tomi Juric's fitness woes.

Brillante was overlooked at right back for the match for Josh Risdon, who excelled and took the opportunity with both hands.

"I look to solve problems, (defensively) I think we have enough players".

"Andrew Nabbout also can play on the side and in the No.10 position, so I have more players who can play more positions". We have enough central-defenders and midfield players, and now I have more options in front with several types of centre-forwards, No.9s. [Maclaren] was for me, the first combination.

The performance got him over the line ahead of the others. I think I need him. "We have to think as a professional [but] it's always an emotional day for everybody". I will not tell about every player, how I speak with him.

"I think everybody must be very happy that this team has a few more new players".

Australia plays its final friendly against Hungary in Budapest on Sunday morning (1.30am kick-off) before the World Cup begins on June 14.
