Children Breathe In 30% More Exhaust Fumes Because of Their Height

Evidence shows that spending time in areas with high levels of air pollution can worsen asthma symptoms, damage lung function and cause other health problems such as heart attacks, strokes and low birth weight.

'In this working group, we will therefore explore in more depth how indoor air pollution affects vulnerable groups, and how its health effects can be prevented.

Copeland, Barrow, Allerdale and Carlisle all came in the top 10 when it came to low levels of air pollution coupled with affordable housing.

All five councils promoting Clean Air Day are encouraging their own staff to either walk or cycle to work, auto share, park and stride or to use public transport.

Pupils, parents, guardians and school staff were encouraged to walk, cycle or scoot to school and leave the auto at home.

Events will take place across Greater Manchester tomorrow (Thursday) to mark a national day of action aimed at tackling poor air quality.

In London, local authorities are asking residents to consider how their transport choices can impact air quality in their areas.

He also joined the council's air quality team to talk to drivers, asking them to turn off their engines when stationary.

Earlier this month the children attended a training session in the Council Chamber at Waltham Forest Town Hall where they shared their views on how air quality could be improved in the borough with deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for the environment Councillor Clyde Loakes.

Elsewhere parents are being encouraged to walk or cycle their children to school along quieter routes, as research by Global Action Plan for Clean Air Day found primary school children are exposed to 2.5 times more pollution when walking a busy route to school compared to a quiet route.

A number of businesses are also backing Clean Air Day, among them Autogas, Certas Energy and Citipark.

Auto parking-operator CitiPark is supporting the day by raising awareness of how electric vehicles can help to reduce air pollution.
