EastEnders actor Leslie Grantham dies aged 71

Actor Leslie Grantham - known for playing "Dirty Den" Watts in Eastenders - has died aged 71.

The actor, who played soap villain Den Watts, had been surrounded by friends and co-stars and earlier reports said he was being monitored by doctors in a United Kingdom hospital. "The chemistry was just extraordinary and a very memorable time and I won't forget him".

She said working with Grantham was full of "memorable times", adding: "They changed my life and they changed his, and I think we were both really lucky that we were cast opposite each other, because the chemistry was magic". But, the first time we rehearsed together, I remember after we'd done a little scene Leslie walked away and went 'Yes, Brilliant!' and I knew exactly what he meant.

Grantham shot to fame playing Den in EastEnders, originally from 1985 to 1989.

The star was best known for his on-screen partnership with actress Anita Dobson who played his long-suffering wife Angie in EastEnders. "RIP big man... loved working with ya in panto... you made me laugh and I learnt a lot from you too. absolutely gutted". See you up there Leslie. "Love and respect always, Tish. X".

"Those iconic Christmas episodes were legendary and they will always be part of EastEnders history".

Former 'EastEnders' stars including Tracy Ann Oberman have shared tributes to Leslie Grantham, after the actor's death on Friday morning.

The announcer said: "And now on BBC One, with Leslie Grantham and soap's greatest bad boy "Dirty" Den in mind, we head to the Square".

The confirmation of Grantham's death comes after reports earlier this week suggested that he had returned to the United Kingdom to receive medical attention.

According to The Sun, close friends and pals in the showbiz industry had been visiting him in hospital this week.

Prior to moving back to south west London he had been living in Bulgaria after splitting from his wife Jane Laurie in 2013.

He even took his talents overseas, finding fame on Bulgarian TV series The English Neighbour.
