First lady's 'I don't care' jacket causes a stir

First lady's 'I don't care' jacket causes a stir

"After today's important visit to Texas, I hope this isn't what the media is going to choose to focus on", Grisham said.

Plans for her to visit a second facility where children housed in cages were seen by The Associated Press last week were cancelled because of flooding there. The facility housed 55 boys and girls, ages 12-17, on Thursday, but only about six of them had been separated from parents, officials said.

Both House bills, backed by Trump but opposed by Democrats and immigration advocacy groups, would fund the wall Trump has proposed along the USA border with Mexico and reduce legal migration, in part by denying visas for some relatives of United States residents and citizens living overseas. The administration also has called for a permanent legislative fix but congressional Republicans said the House was likely to reject two immigration bills created to halt the practice of splitting up families and address a range of other immigration issues.

"I'm here to learn about your facility and I'd also like to ask you how I can help", she said.

Republican US Representatives Ralph Norman and Mark Meadows, prominent members of the conservative Freedom Caucus, told reporters they did not think either of the bills had enough support to pass the Republican-controlled House.

"She wants to see what's real", the first lady's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told CNN during a news briefing en route to Texas, explaining Trump's decision to visit. Trump was not wearing the jacket when she landed in McAllen, Texas. "I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?" written on the back of Melania's jacket, refers to the Fake News Media.

The first lady herself called for political compromise to end the stripping of children from their parents - the result of the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy against illegal border crossings, in effect since May.

Her spokeswoman said "there was no hidden message" in the former fashion model's sartorial choice.

Grisham underscored that message in a tweet with the hashtags #SheCares and #ItsJustAJacket.

Melania Trump made an unannounced visit to a Texas facility Thursday to get a first-hand look at some of the migrant children sent there by the USA government after their families entered the country illegally.

The military-style jacket is reportedly a $39 Zara garment that has "I really don't care, do u?" printed on the back, according to The Daily Mail.

When asked what message the first lady's jacket meant to send, spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said: "It's a jacket".

The $39 jacket, which Mrs. Trump donned before and after a visit to migrant children in Texas on Thursday, has become the flawless blank canvas to sound off online.

The youthful jacket sharply contrasts with the first lady's typically bold, foreign-flavoured wardrobe. In public appearances, the first lady has worn designs by Dolce & Gabbana, Del Pozo, Christian Dior, Emilio Pucci, Givenchy and Valentino, often with daringly high Christian Louboutin heels.

The students are among 58 at the Upbring New Hope Children's Center, where Mrs. Trump made a surprise visit Thursday.

"Facing worldwide outcry over the separation policy, Trump had signed an executive order on Wednesday to stop the separations and keep families together during immigration proceedings".

Excuse me? The media isn't preventing the first lady from helping children - and reporters and commentators like me can't do a lot for the kids who are now being held apart from their parents.

"When the children come here, what kind of state, physical and mental state they come here?"

"We see them as if they were our own", said Roy De La Cerda, the program director. He says staff have "a tremendous passion for working with these children" and the center is "their home".
