Grandmom arrested after allegedly driving with kids in dog kennels

In an affidavit, Cheeks admitted to placing the children in the pet kennels and transporting them from Whitehaven to Collierville to Downtown Memphis.

Sixty-two-year-old Leimome Cheeks was arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment, WREG reported.

With temperatures reaching the 95 degree mark, the 7 and 8-year-old explained to officers how they were hot, because there were no vents in the back to keep them cool.

According to police, the children were spotted Saturday afternoon in the 3700 block of Elvis Presley Blvd. near Graceland.

In a weird story, a woman was arrested for driving kids around, not in booster seats or in the back seats, but in two pet kennels placed in the back of her auto.

Cheeks' neighbor, Camilla Cowan, says she was shocked to see the video on Facebook but thinks Cheeks didn't realize she was doing anything wrong.

Cheeks was taken into police custody after a concerned witness shot video of her on Saturday as she opened the trunk of her Ford Explorer and released the children from the kennels.

Speaking to local media, one neighbour said: "Shocking, it really is".

Cowan recently bought two German Shepard puppies, neighbors told WREG.

Children's Services and Memphis Police are investigating.

"I mean it could be an honest mistake".

Police said the children were OK after the incident. Court records show an arraignment scheduled for Monday has been continued until July 9, when she will tell a judge if she has hired a lawyer of if the court will need to appoint one.
