KFC: Try Our Vegetarian Chicken

KFC: Try Our Vegetarian Chicken

That's according to restaurant consultant Aaron Allen, who told USA Today other fast food chains will likely follow KFC's lead.

Fast food chain, KFC is testing out a new recipe in Britain by ditching its most famous and important ingredient: chicken. According to FoodBeast, KFC is going to experiment with plant-based fried chicken at some of its United Kingdom locations.

"Development of the recipe is still in its very early stages, and so the options we're exploring in our kitchen are still top secret", a spokesperson for KFC said in a statement. They will also introduce multiple meals that are under 600 calories by 2020.

Vegetarians will soon get an option of their own at Kentucky fried chicken, but there's a catch.

KFC is not the only company looking to shake up its established menu.

Victoria Robertson, a nutritionist, and head of food innovation of KFC UK and Ireland explained that KFC recognized how people are becoming more passionate about healthy eating habits.

"It's a tricky challenge, because our fans absolutely love our Original Recipe chicken, and we won't be changing the Colonel's secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices".

In March, Public Health England announced steps to cut calories in popular foods by 20 percent in six years to help stop childhood obesity.

"This is about providing choice, and offering delicious, signature KFC taste that just happens to be lighter".

"How sharply has vegetarianism increased in the U.S.?"

In deciding to experiment with a vegetarian chicken substitute, KFC also seems to be responding to a growing demand for meat-replacement products such as tofu and soy-based burgers and sausages.

It suggested that food chains change the recipe of their products, reduce the portion size, and encourage their customers to opt for lower calorie products.
