Miami among potential host cities for 2026 World Cup

The North America bid received 134 of the 203 votes, while Morocco polled 65 in the vote of the FIFA Congress in Moscow which saw one member vote for "neither bid".

Edmontonian Alphonso Davies, 17, was the first to speak in the United Bid's final presentation to the FIFA Congress prior to the vote.

Water is sprayed on the artificial turf before Switzerland and Ecuador play a FIFA Women's World Cup soccer match at B.C. Place stadium in Vancouver, B.C., in 2015. National-team base camps could also be held at local sites such as Loyola Maryland and Navy. "Our cities are ready to host today", said John Kristick, executive director of the United Bid Committee.

Miami and Orlando are among the 23 cities in the running to host matches, and Hard Rock Stadium - built for soccer and known as a host to sold-out global matches - is expected to be selected. With M&T Bank Stadium's $120 million renovation set to be completed by next fall, city officials will have two years to address issues both technical and otherwise.

If we're spitballing, it's hard to imagine the United States being forced to qualify for a World Cup in which it is the predominant host.

The current plan is for the host 60 matches. The intercontinental playoff will be held somewhere in the United States, Canada or Mexico, perhaps in November 2025.

Soccer is Mexico's national sport, but is still considered a niche sport in the United States and Canada. "We have to focus on the football, I've said it many times". There is now a professional league that includes impressive infrastructure such as stadiums and training grounds, European games are omnipresent on television, top players now come from across the country, and the World Cup is big business. MLS commissioner Don Garber called it "a monumental step in our collective mission to further advance the game of soccer in North America" and added "there's no doubt that World Cup 2026 will elevate the sport of soccer to entirely new levels".

Of the 23 cities chosen as potential host sites, 15 now have MLS teams. The United States is likely to have 10 cities selected to host games, while Mexico and Canada are expected to each have three.

Montreal city Coun. Rosannie Filato, who is responsible for sports and recreation, said the city implemented an action plan in 2016 to host worldwide sporting events and is investing in transit systems.

The projections of revenues from Morocco, all 14 of whose proposed stadiums would have had to be newly built or renovated, were half the $14bn now promised from TV and stuffed stands in the U.S., and that is a language all the Federation Internationale de Football Association family understands. We've also got another fanatical soccer city in Portland 170 miles south, but more than anything, Seattle sports fan recognize the magnitude of the moment.
