Nabil Fekir to Liverpool: Lyon star ‘picked shirt number’ before transfer collapsed

The two clubs had agreed terms for a £48 million transfer, rising in add-ons, but since Friday there has been speculation that Fekir either failed a medical or the Reds wanted a second opinion on a knee injury suffered more than two years ago.

Le Graet offered a positive comment for fans fearful that the 24-year-old may not complete his switch to Anfield.

France Football Association president Noel Le Graet had suggested the move was nearly completed - according to reports in France - before Lyon's announcement.

"It's under negotiation, I think it will be done". Liverpool's medical team had flown out to Paris to conduct a medical at France's national team base in Clairefontaine.

In a statement, Lyon wrote: "Olympique Lyonnais informs that the tripartite negotiations with the Liverpool club and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the captain of OL have not succeeded and that Olympique Lyonnais has chose to put an end to this negotiation. There is something logical, it has already been done for others".

With Lyon's latest statement emphatically explaining their position, it seems Liverpool will miss out on one of their primary transfer targets.

Liverpool's delay in announcing the arrival of Fekir on Friday sparked speculation but he was still expected to complete the switch before jetting off to Russian Federation for the World Cup.

"It would be better for him, but he's not perturbed", he said of the No.10.

Fekir scored 21 goals in all competitions for Lyon this past season.

The Mirror's report intimates that Liverpool had proposed to Lyon that they lower the transfer fee because of those concerns - and needless to say, the French side did not play ball.

It has been reported that Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas is stalling in the hope Fekir's value will rise during the World Cup.
