But Morocco, bidding for a fifth time, had closed the gap on "United 2026" to the point that nobody in Moscow wanted to make a public prediction ahead of the vote at the FIFA Congress, where 207 member associations, minus the four bidding nations, cast ballots.

While Caf appear to have managed to convince the bulk of its members to gang-up for Morocco, the Cosafa region has however been infiltrated by the North Americans with South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia publicly pronouncing their support for the United bid.

The North American victory suggests football officials are ready to gather for a World Cup in a country whose government has demonstrated its willingness to jail corrupt sports leaders through undercover investigations.

Even if Trump were to be elected for a second four-year term in 2020 he would not be president when the World Cup kicks off in 2026.

The "United Bid" calls for the host 60 matches, including all games from the quarter-finals through to the final.

On Twitter Trudeau said: "Good news this morning: The 2026 FIFA World Cup is coming to Canada, the U.S. and Mexico". The country hosted in 1970, but it also hosted in 1986 after it was originally awarded to Colombia, who couldn't host for economic reasons.

The 2022 tournament will be hosted by Qatar while the 2018 edition kicks off in Moscow on Thursday when Russian Federation play Saudi Arabia.

Qatar, who will host in 4 years' time, will mark the first time the tournament is played during winter months because of the nation's high temperatures during summertime.

With the decision to hand the United Bid - comprised of the Canada, Mexico and United States football federations - the rights to the 2026 edition of the World Cup, it gives those in the western quadrant of the world something significant to look forward to for the future.

"It's a bit emotional for us today", Carlos Cordeiro, president of U.S. Soccer, said after the vote.

"When they help us fight against corruption, of course, we are pleased", Infantino said. Both the United States and Canada failed to qualify for this year's World Cup. Three cities each in Canada and Mexico will also host games. "Congratulations - a great deal of hard work!"

"Thank you so, so much for this incredible honour".

The "United Bid" had been favourites from the start but Morocco's promise of a "European World Cup in Africa" was appealing to the committee.

To cut down on travel, the USA -led bid proposed having teams play all their games in the same regional areas. The only other World Cup played in more than one country was in the 2002 event shared by South Korea and Japan.

Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal are Canadian candidate host cities for the men's soccer showcase, expanded to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament.

The evaluation report also offers a "technical scoring" of the two bids, with Morocco getting 274.9 out of 500, compared to the United bid's 402.8 total.
