Officer receives award for rescuing toddler seen running along busy highway

Police Department officer was honored for rescuing a toddler running alongside a freeway last month.

Mannino was presented his department's lifesaving award on Thursday, the department said.

Last month, Sgt. Andrew Mannino's dash cam captured the shocking sight of the toddler running all by himself in the right lane of the highway.

Sgt. Anthony Mannino is being hailed as a hero after he rescued a 1-year-old from a busy highway near Aurora, Illinois.

Mannino, who was on patrol, stopped his police vehicle to block a lane of traffic, ran after the child and scooped him up, telling him "you're OK".

After about 30 strides, Mannino catches the child, according to the dashcam footage. Mannino then tells dispatchers he would begin looking for the boy's parents. No one was hurt in the incident.

Naperville Police said the little boy "escaped his mother's watchful eye" and got out of his house.

The boy's mother arrived moments after Mannino saved him, WGN reports.
