Ontario businesses wary but hopeful about new populist leader Ford

Now, the Progressive Conservative Leader, who won a majority Thursday night, faces the monumental task of balancing the books, cutting taxes and not laying off anyone. "We'll be out looking for an auditing firm to go into the province to go line item by line item".

"I was concerned how many times does it happen?" he said.

Ford will now lead Ontario, a province that is home to almost a third of Canada's 36 million residents as well as much of the country's financial and manufacturing sectors.

Ford, who won the Ontario PC leadership with the help of anti-abortion groups and hardline social conservatives, pandered shamelessly to the religious right through various promises to place new restrictions on abortion access and attack the rights and freedoms of women. So, although I've lost this election tonight, I have not in any way lost my passion for continuing this work. For that matter, Andrea Horwath's strong showing, vaulting the NDP into official Opposition status in Ontario, may also give a boost to federal New Democrats.

"We have taken back Ontario". "I'm hopeful that Mr. Ford understands that we need revenues in our province to pay for the kinds of things that people expect a government to provide".

But, despite not releasing a fully costed campaign platform, something he had promised to do for months, Ford swayed voters throughout the campaign by making a number of expensive promises and promising to find billions in government "inefficiencies".

Ford said he'd repeal the sex-ed curriculum, but would not commit to doing so by September, when asked in a Friday press conference.

"I think you have to go back nearly a find a comparable situation in terms of the challenges the party faces", he said, pointing to the Liberals' dramatic decline in the early 1900s and their eventual resurgence in the 1930s under the leadership of Mitch Hepburn. It's also important to note that each vote does matter, as we see time and again with races - usually at the local level - being decided by a handful of votes.

People don't have to wait until election day to vote.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement Thursday night offering his and the Government of Canada's congratulations to Ford.

Trudeau and U.S. President Donald Trump have exchanged tough words after the U.S. imposed hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada, Mexico and Europe.

"They don't call me the Steeltown Scrapper for nothing", Horwath said recently.

"You may use one of our 10 voted ballot drive-thru locations throughout the county, we'll have one here downtown, you don't even have to get out of the auto", Orth said. The bar is now eight seats.

Kathleen Wynne, the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party and the first openly gay premier in Canada, will step down from her post.

Ontario's new premier has previously voiced support for Donald Trump, but has dismissed direct comparisons to the USA president. For all the good she achieved, her run as leader was plagued by fiscal mayhem - the gas plant cancellation scandal, the eHealth and Ornge air ambulance boondoggles, the contentious sale of Hydro One and the pile of debt facing the province.

While the Ontario election resulted in more Indigenous candidates and an Indigenous presence at Queen's Park, that may be little solace to people who made the effort to vote if the province doesn't actually further engage First Nations.
