Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul dies, aged 54

They wrote: "Vincent Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away".

Since 2006, Paul was the drummer for Hellyeah, a heavy metal supergroup that also includes Mudvayne vocalist Chad Gray and Nothingface guitarist Tom Maxwell.

"No further details are available at this time", the statement added.

Abbott's representative confirmed his death to the music magazine, but the cause of death is not known at this time.

Vinne formed Pantera in the "80s along with his brother 'Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

The band was nominated for Grammys in 1995 and 2001, and their third album, Far Beyond Driven, debuted at number one in the USA in 1994. Tragically, Darrell was shot dead during a Damageplan concert in 2004.

After the dissolution of Pantera, the Abbott brothers formed Damageplan.

Fans and fellow rockers, including Alice Cooper, Slash, Anthrax and Duff McKagan, are mourning the loss.

As news of Abbot's death spread, many voiced their gratitude for the drummer's contribution to heavy metal, sympathy for his family and paid tribute to his late brother as well. Born in Abilene Texas, Paul now drummed for the supergroup Hellyeah, which included Mudvayne vocalist Chad Gray and Nothingface guitarist Tom Maxwell.

Their most recent release was Unden!able in 2016.

I just woke up in Belgium to the news that my friend Vinnie Paul has passed away.

This is truly a sad day in metal, and we will update as soon as we know more. Loved when Pantera did shows with us and in later years Vinnie was always front and center at all KISS shows.

Tragic news about Vinnie Paul today. Say hello to Daryl for me.

"Rest in peace, Vinnie", Gene Simmons, bassists and co-founder of stadium rock giants Kiss wrote on Twitter.
