PGA TOUR ST. JUDE CLASSIC Johnson tops field, regains No. 1 spot

SHOT OF THE DAY: Stewart Cink makes a hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth in a wonderful Saturday for him.

Johnson has been dominant in multiple aspects of his game this season.

"It's going to feel a little different than the typical Sunday round of golf, but I'm excited for it", Putnam said. Putnam added a birdie on the seventh, but it wasn't enough to catch Johnson. Defending U.S. Open champ Brooks Koepka (69) was at 5 under, and Phil Mickelson (70) was at 4 under.

The 33-year-old climbed back above Justin Thomas, who claimed the spot from Johnson last month, with a tournament-winning 19-under-par score.

Nordqvist won the 54-hole event in 2015 and 2016 on Stockton Seaview's Bay Course and finished second a year ago. Snedeker turned in a bogey-free round with eight birdies needing only 22 putts.

"Playing the way I did all week, playing the way I did today (Sunday), knowing everything that was on the line, gives me a lot of confidence going into next week (US Open)".

"Statistically, you feel like you should have made holes in one all the time out here as much as you play but they don't come around very often", the 2009 British Open champion said.

Johnson, who is looking to go back to world number one just before the US Open with a win in Memphis, carded a third-round 65, with Putnam shooting a six-under par 64. "I hit a lot of good shots and had a lot of good looks at birdies. I'm proud of the way I played, the way I handled it".

He was "this close" to back-to-back eagles - something J.B. Holmes accomplished on holes 2 and 3 on Friday with a hole out from 115 yards at 2 and an 8-foot putt on No. 3.

He previewed his dramatic finish on the par-5 16th.

Just for good measure, Johnson holed out for eagle on the par-4 18th to win by six strokes.

It appears on paper as a one-sided battle but tournament golf works in odd ways and Putnam is an emerging star with two victories on the Web.Com Tour prior to graduation to the bigger stage this year. A third-round 65 puts him in a tie for 10th at 6 under.
