President Xi Jinping confers upon Vladimir Putin ‘highest state honour of China’

"The very fact that we confirm the high level of our interaction and talk about the need for its development, in my opinion, is of great importance, for contemporary global relations, for Russian-Chinese relations", he said.

On his 19th visit to China after his recent re-election, Putin held talks with Xi while on his way to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting at Qingdao on Saturday.

Tension between President Donald Trump and traditionally close US allies has overshadowed that worldwide meeting. Russian Federation was pushed out of the then G8 due to its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea four years ago.

"This medal of friendship represents the Chinese people's lofty respect for President Putin, and symbolises the profound friendship between China and Russia", Xi said.

Putin also welcomed Trump's call to bring Moscow back into the G-7 group of leading industrialised nations.

Putin said Russian Federation will honour its part of the deal, adding Moscow is still in favour of the "unconditional implementation" of the pact.

Trump sparred with French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Twitter in the lead-up to the G7 summit, which he will leave early to travel to Singapore for his high-stakes meeting with Kim Jong Un.

The expert recalled that during the latest Q&A, Putin said that in case of an escalation in Donbas, this will have "grave consequences for the Ukrainian statehood as such". Some reports indicated that Trump was looking to pull out altogether, while Trump spent Friday morning tweeting about how "unfair" the current trade deals were.

Lavrov said Russian Federation is "working fine in other formats" such as the Group of 20, TASS state news agency reported.

China is mired in tough negotiations with the United States to avoid a trade war, while Moscow has deep differences with Washington on multiple diplomatic fronts, including Syria and Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Putin and Trump have mentioned Vienna as a possible venue for their summit, but no decision has been made, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Qingdao yesterday.

Not content with just starting a trade war with America's supposed allies, Donald Trump risked enraging G7 allies further by suggesting that Russian Federation should be reinstated as a member.

Rouhani praised China and Russian Federation for their continued efforts to maintain the nuclear deal.

Tension has been building over a year of policymaking that has distanced the United States from traditional allies, including by Trump's decisions to withdraw the USA from the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear agreement.

Mr Trump is expected to face stern opposition from the majority of the group over his protectionist policies on trade, including harsh new tariffs on steel and aluminium which would hit the European Union and Canada.
