Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown quits Twitter over homophobic memes

"Stranger Things" star Millie Bobby Brown has quit Twitter after some users shared memes attributing homophobic, anti-gay comments to her, according to several entertainment publications, including People.

When one Twitter user pointed out that the girl making the claim doesn't have a hijab on in her profile picture, she responded, "because she ripped it off me".

And some of the memes are just racist and homophobic.

Addressing and dealing with toxic fans online is nothing new, but the conversation against online bullying and toxic fandom has been gaining traction since Tran's forced departure from Instagram.

But there are some who say the memes started as an inside joke within the LGBT community.

Many have pointed out that Brown, who was one of the first recipients of MTV's gender-neutral awards past year, has always been a vocal supporter of LGBT rights.

In reality, Brown is an active supporter of gay rights and an anti-bullying advocate.

The trolls posted the terrible memes during Pride month, and one of the completely fake Photoshopped images took off and got wide circulation.

Brown - who was born in Spain but spent her childhood years growing up in Bournemouth, England - was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role as telekenetic teenager Eleven in Stranger Things.
