Val Kilmer Confirmed For Top Gun 2 Return

Kilmer portray Iceman, the rival pilot to Cruise's Maverick in the original Tony Scott-directed title.

In any event, Kilmer's been in poor health over the last few years, so it's legitimately heartening to hear that Top Gun: Maverick may have found room for him and that he'd be up for playing the part.

The highly-anticipated sequel to the 1986 movie classic now has its two original leads in place, with sources telling The Wrap Val will reprise his aviator character Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, in the project.

Kilmer has been vying for the Top Gun: Maverick role since it was announced previous year.

"This is a long way off so calm down". After an enthusiastic response, however, the actor then added a cautionary note to his announcement that he may have "jumped the topgun" and that "being offered a role is very different from doing a role". "An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent..."

Val Kilmer feels the need, the need for speed again.

Top Gun followed Maverick and Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) as they are given a chance to train at the Navy's Fighter Weapons School (aka Top Gun) at the former Naval Air Station (NAS) Miramar in San Diego. The rest of the cast has yet to be announced, but Tron: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski is directing the sequel.

The film is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer for Jerry Bruckheimer Films and David Ellison for Skydance, and is expected to release in July next year.
