Watch the first trailer for Disney and Tim Burton's 'Dumbo'

As a pairing it makes sense - Dumbo is a dark tale of a baby elephant with extra long ears who is abused and separated from his mother by cruel circus folk before flying away. At least it gives us something to look forward to next year. The screenplay of Dumbo is written by Ehren Kruger.

Disney's program of remaking its classic animated movies has proved to be a hugely lucrative one to date. Burton directs Eva Green, Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell and Michael Keaton, as well as some pink elephants. Directed by Tim Burton, the teaser of Dumbo showcases a magical world of a circus where dreams take flight.

Technically, Burton " s film picks up where the 1941 original left off. Many of those are slated to arrive soon, including updated versions of The Lion King, Mulan, and Aladdin, but perhaps none of those forthcoming projects has the star power of Dumbo, whose first trailer indicates that it'll be right in line with its director's idiosyncratic body of work.

With the likes of The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast continuing to prove box office gold, Disney is continuing to remake its classics in live-action (or, photoreal-animated) form - and its latest offers an intriguing pairing of material and director. Circus owner Max Medici (DeVito) enlists Holt to care for a newborn elephant, whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. The trailer also introduces Michael Keaton as entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere, Alan Arkin as Wall Street tycoon J. Griffin Remington, and Eva Green as aerial artist Colette Marchant, who's seen swinging from a huge chandelier. "Dumbo" flies into theaters on March 29, 2019.
