Woman arrested for transporting children in dog kennels

Cell phone video taken by a concerned citizen in southwest Tennessee shows a woman releasing her two grandchildren from dog kennels in the back of her trunk.

WMC reported that Leimome Cheeks, 62, of Memphis, was charged with two counts of child endangerment, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison if convicted.

"Leimome Cheeks was interviewed and admitted to riding from Whitehaven to Collierville with the children in the kennel", a police affidavit says.

In roasting temperatures around 35C, Cheeks drove from Whitehaven to Collierville, in Memphis, Tennessee, with the kids locked up in the back of her truck.

They said Cheeks didn't have air conditioning on and kept the windows closed. I couldn't see her actually doing that.

Further investigation is now underway.

Many have inquired about a viral video from Saturday that shows two children being transported in pet kennels in the.

According to authorities, there was no air conditioning in the back of the vehicle where the kids sat, and the children told police they were hot inside the kennels.

Speaking to local media, one neighbour said: "Shocking, it really is". I only met her like once maybe twice. She's such a nice lady.

Cheeks was being held Sunday in the Shelby County Jail.

Strangely enough, there is little information available on the relations between Cheeks and the children, aged 7 and 8-years-old. She has been arrested for child endangerment. Their grandmother is scheduled to be in court Monday morning at 9 a.m.
