Ayub Ali, 61, was minding Aunt Molly's Food Store in North Lauderdale on Tuesday when an armed robber entered the shop.

On Feb. 14, Ali's daughter was in a classroom in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's 1200 building, where the massacre that killed 17 people occurred, according to a family friend.

The suspect took money from the cash register and left, but then returned shortly after and shot Ali.

However, Broward County Sheriff's Office say the man then came back and shot Mr Ali.

Ali leaves behind a wife, who used to work at the convenience store, and four children - a 22-month-old son, a son going into first grade, a son who will be a sophomore in high school and a daughter who will be a junior.

Investigators said the man wore a black vest and reddish-orange shorts with black and white stripes on the sides.

Voter registration among Americans aged 18-29 surged nationwide following the February mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 people and spurred a youth-led movement for strengthening gun control laws, which has featured school walkouts, marches, town halls, and voter registration drives across the country.

Paramedics transported Ali, 61, to Fort Lauderdale's Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Ali's store reopened Thursday with memorials placed outside by loyal customers, NBC 6 reports.

Ali was an immigrant from Bangladesh who had been in the United States for 20 years.

"This is the biggest part that hurts me", Rios told the station.

'For somebody to just rob him and take his life away, it's not fair, ' she said.

Authorities are offering a reward for any information leading to an arrest.
