Iran's top leader rejects talks with U.S. to solve problems

While some Iranians blame the Americans, others say their own leaders should have known better.

Khamenei, in a meeting with Iranian diplomats in Tehran, said, "Negotiations with the Europeans should not be cut off, but we should not wait too long for a European package and instead, we should do a lot of work inside the country", according to Iran's Press TV.

Khamenei told officials in Iran's Foreign Ministry earlier on July 21 that it would be an "obvious mistake" to negotiate with the United States because Washington is unreliable.

"The idea that problems can be resolved through negotiations or relations with the United States is a major error", he added.

Iran may block oil tankers from using the Strait of Hormuz in response to possible U.S. sanctions over the country's nuclear programme.

Also in a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his cabinet in Tehran on July 15, Ayatollah Khamenei said the European signatories to the nuclear deal must provide Tehran with necessary guarantees about the continued implementation of the deal.

There have been further threats to the economy posed by the imposition of U.S. sanctions and the loss of oil customers after Donald Trump pulled out of the nuclear deal.

Iran has warned it is ready to boost its uranium enrichment to higher levels if talks with Europe on salvaging the nuclear deal fail.

Following Trump's decision to quit the historic Iran nuclear pact on May 8, the United States vowed to re-impose sanctions lifted under the accord against Iran and inflict punishments like secondary sanctions on nations that have business links with Iran.

Trump said during a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit earlier in July that with the USA increasing sanctions on Iran, he expected Iranian negotiators "at a certain point" to "call me and say, 'Let's make a deal, ' and we'll make a deal".

"I have reiterated that we can not rely on the American words and even their signature, therefore, negotiations with them are fruitless", he was quoted as saying.

Washington's withdrawal from the landmark Iran nuclear deal was criticized across the world.
