Tiger Woods moves into share of lead at British Open

Following his -2 round, which put him at -4 and two off the American duo of Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner, McIlroy was asked about his battling, scrambling qualities.

Spieth had started the round on three under and three shots off the lead, but the eagle took him within one of the pace-setters at the time.

Kisner made a tough par save on the 17th and saved par again from behind the 18th green for a 68. I putted well. I holed out when I needed to.

They were at 9-under 204.

"If I get a good round out there in the morning, who knows come Sunday", Herbert said.

Molinari is mindful of an expected change in the weather conditions for the last day, with the wind that can be so damaging in these parts finally expected to make its presence felt. Then Phil Mickelson plays with Eddie Pepperell in the group after, all before midday. 10 and 11. His birdie putt at the 14th hole lifted him temporarily into a share of the lead at 6 under par.

It was there for only 20 minutes. But it was there.

He lost some momentum with a bogey at the short 16th but had luck on his side at the last when his drive landed a foot away from the Barry Burn only to bounce away from the water to the relative safety of the long grass - he then salvaged a par after a tremendous approach shot. He figured it would at least keep him in range.

Despite their wretched luck, seven Australians made the halfway cut, led by major winners Adam Scott and Jason Day and fearless rookies Lucas Herbert and Cameron Davis, to give themselves a fighting chance of Open glory.

"It would be better on Sunday, but I'm right there". "And I did not get off to exactly the best start, being 2-over through three".

Kevin Chappell (67) is two shots back at 7-under.

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland - Forgoing the driving range or the putting green following his round, Tiger Woods instead was headed for the gym late Friday afternoon.

In 2014 McIlroy was the victor of the Claret Jug at a sun-soaked Hoylake, but he refused to let the conditions get to him on Friday in his chase for a fifth major title and first for four years.

A three-time victor of this tournament, Woods' performance was one of many startling performances of the day.

On a day of low scoring, McIlroy bogeyed two of his last three holes for a 1-under 70.

Rory McIlroy, pledging to "go down swinging" to rid himself of a bad Masters memory this year, had another 69 and was part of a large group two shots behind. He gave another shot back on the 15th when he pulled his second shot toward the gallery, though he made enough birdies to stay within range.

"I've been called Dustin many times", the joint leader Zach told reporters.

The opening hole is 396 yards on the card, with the fairway getting narrow between two bunkers.
