Tour de France leader Geraint Thomas makes Chris Froome revelation

The quintet had attacked and counter-attacked one another on the way up one of cycling's most famous climbs, but were back together in the final few hundred metres before Thomas accelerated out of the last bend to take the stage win for the second straight day.

For Geraint Thomas, nothing compares to wearing the Tour de France yellow jersey -now he gets to do it all over again.

Geraint Thomas won a dramatic five-man sprint finish to secure back-to-back stage wins at the Tour de France and retain the yellow jersey.

The Welshman led home Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin and AG2R La Mondiale's Romain Bardet at the end of the 175.5km stage from Bourg-Saint-Maurice, with his Sky team-mate Chris Froome fourth and Movistar's Mikel Landa fifth. He got up and finished the stage but abandoned the race after scans at Grenoble hospital revealed a fractured vertebrae for the Italian.

With the Alpine stages done, Thomas will - barring a crash - likely remain in yellow through the second rest day. I'm sorry about him.

When asked if he would wait and help a struggling Froome ahead of today's stage, Thomas said: "I don't know. I am just going to try to enjoy tomorrow".

"In my eyes, Froomey is still our leader", Thomas said. "If people don't like Sky and want to boo, boo all you like, but let us race", Thomas told a news conference.

"As long as they don't affect the race that's the main thing".

With questions over which rider Sky is backing for victory, it was a bold demonstration of strength by Thomas, who has been Froome's loyal lieutenant for years.

This stage was the first of three days in the Alps following the relatively flat legs of the first nine days.

After being on the attack for much of the day on the road to Alpe d'Huez, Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) takes the Zwift Rider of the Day on stage 12 of the Tour de France.

He says he's just trying to make the best of his form for now, without knowing what the full three weeks will hold for him.
