Uber Announces New Tools for Tricky Pickups

Six Republican campaign workers say they were kicked out of an Uber after the driver told them: "Welcome to the resistance", The Daily Caller is reporting. The idea was that you select a color in the app, and that color will light up an Uber logo inside the driver's vehicle - and your phone screen will display the same color, so you can hold it up to help your driver spot you.

'All they have is the pin and the address. Drivers will receive a message so they know which colour to look for. It isn't much, considering that you may miss your flight as a result, but we'll take what we can get.

It should also help reduce stress when a rider orders an Uber outside a crowded event, such as a concert or sports game, where many other people may be ordering a auto at the same time. This works just as it sounds; users will be able to pre-schedule a ride ahead of time and Uber promises users that it'll arrive on-time, otherwise they'll get their money back via the way of Uber credit. These improvements join existing features that let you edit your pickup location, share your live location so your driver can see where you're located in relation to your pickup spot, and help you spot your driver using a Beacon when it's dark. You can even tell the drivers that you're wearing a particular colour of jacket to help them identify you better. Under the new system, if your driver fails to show up at the scheduled time, Uber will give you $10 that you can put toward your next trip. Now, you can send your driver a direct message or provide a quick update via one of several pre-written messages that can be sent with a single tap. We designed Pickup Messages to encourage safe driving: your messages are read aloud, and drivers can simply tap to respond.

Uber's in-app messaging feature has also been tweaked.

Why it matters: Uber is constantly looking for ways to improve its service.
