Aretha Franklin Is Reportedly In 'Gravely Ill' Condition

The 76-year-old soul legend - who last performed at the Elton John AIDS Foundation party in NY in November - is said to be at her home in Detroit, where her loved ones have gathered to say their goodbyes.

Veteran entertainment reporter Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411 says the singer's family are "asking for prayers and privacy".

Despite her ostensible plans to retire, she was still booked to perform at this year's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April but had to pull out of that gig and her 76th birthday show in March per doctor's orders, according to Rolling Stone.

The singer was diagnosed with cancer in 2010, though she continued to perform as she dealt with her illness.

Aretha is surrounded by family and people close to her.

Fighting: Aretha Franklin is "gravely ill" according to reports.

She said: "I'm doing well generally, all test have come back good".

"I was sitting there reading the newspaper and it was saying someone in my family said that", she added.

In previous years, all three of Aretha's brothers and sisters have died of cancer.

'I will be recording, but this will be my a year ago in concert, ' she announced during a Detroit radio interview that February. I feel very, very enriched and satisfied with respect to where my career came from and where it is now'.

Franklin was also the first woman to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and has won a total of 18 Grammy Awards. Schooled in gospel and blues, she made a name for herself as one amongst the most prominent and iconic Black American artists to cross over to a mainstream audience in the 1960s.
