Dallas County announces first West Nile Virus death of 2018

West Nile Virus has made its second appearance in Lambton County this summer, according to the town's public health unit. No other details about the victim were released.

The first probable case of the virus in 2018 was reported in Allegheny County in late July.

Since 2000, 134 cases of the virus have been diagnosed in CT residents and three people have died after being infected with the virus. But some cases can worsen to include swelling of the brain. They can be infected when they feed on the blood of infected birds.

Use effective insect repellent such as DEET or Picaridin.

Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing. Standing water can be treated with EPA-approved larvicides to kill mosquitoes before they become adults.

Drain or treat all standing water in and around your home or workplace.

Minimize time spent outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

Health officials say the patient was infected with the more serious neuroinvasive form of the disease.
