Former Tour de France champion Ullrich arrested over alleged attack

A former victor of the Tour de France was arrested in Frankfurt for allegedly beating and attempting to strangle an escort in his hotel suite. She says Ullrich was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and could be charged with "assault or attempted murder".

Jan Ullrich, who won the Tour de France in 1997, was arrested after an alleged attak on an escort in Frankfurt.

He was also arrested the previous Friday in Majorca after reportedly jumping over a neighbour's fence and making threats.

The 1997 Tour de France victor had flown to Frankfurt from his home in Mallorca, where he had been involved in an altercation in the garden of his neighbour, German action film star Til Schweiger, last weekend. Ullrich was arrested in the early morning at a luxury hotel in Frankfurt.

A police spokesperson told the media, "It seems Mr. Ullrich and an escort woman had a dispute and that he attacked her".

German news site Spiegel said his lawyer did not respond to a request for comment. He had announced he was returning to Germany to begin treatment for drug and alcohol problems after his arrest in Spain last week on suspicion of breaking into the villa of a German film star and threatening his guests.

Former German cyclist and Tour de France victor Jan Ullrich addresses the media in the northern Swiss town of Weinfelden, Switzerland, July 21, 2015.

Ullrich told Germany's Bild newspaper in an interview this week that he had marriage problems and was emotionally stressed after his wife had chose to separate.

In 2013, he admitted to doping, having been served a two-year ban by sporting regulators.
