'Immense tragedy': Motorway bridge collapses in Genoa, Italy

Dozens of people are reported to have been killed after a large section of motorway bridge collapsed onto houses in the northern port city of Genoa.

The video, filmed by a resident, shows the moment Ponte Morandi collapsed as various drivers were crossing it.

Soon afterward, Italy's Adnkronos news agency cited an emergency ambulance service spokesman estimating dozens had perished.

The Italian fire service said that the viaduct, located in an industrial area in the west of the city, collapsed at around 10am Irish time.

The section of the bridge that collapsed was some 100 metres above ground.

A bridge was constructed in 1960s as part of the A10 toll motorway. Restructuring work on the bridge was carried out in 2016.

Local police said the bridge collapsed during a severe downpour and violent storm. Other images showed a green truck that had stopped on the bridge just meters (yards) short of the gaping hole in the bridge.

Italy's government Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli said the collapse appeared to be "an vast tragedy", but he did not immediately confirm any casualties. Authorities suspected structural weakness was the cause of the collapse, ANSA reported.
