Jose Mourinho hints at a change of tactics in Leicester City opener

The club only wanted to sign a defender in the bracket of Raphaël Varane, although Real Madrid would not listen to any offers for the World Cup victor.

Mourinho's blatant plea came amidst a groundswell of anger at the antics of the Man United board.

Manchester United have struggled to land some of their top targets in the summer transfer window to raise questions about Mourinho's future at Old Trafford.

When talking in a media session about Spurs' opening fixture against Newcastle this Saturday lunchtime, Pochettino addressed the rumours, saying: "We didn't receive (any offer) for any player".

Manchester United might have purposefully denied Jose Mourinho his wish of a new centre-back in the hope that they can drive him out of the Old Trafford hot-seat.

Leicester manager Claude Puel must similarly decide whether to include Jamie Vardy and Harry Maguire.

However, there has been little other late movement from the top six clubs with Mourinho in particular frustrated at missing out on a host of targets to bolster his options in central defense.

How Mourinho reacts from now will be dictated to some extent by results, but the key objectives at the turn of the year have all been fulfilled as far as the club are concerned.

Pochettino added: "I am happy to keep all the squad together, there were many rumours during the summer about players out". He said on Thursday that some of Paul Pogba, Ashley Young, Fellaini and Jesse Lingard may yet be involved against Leicester.

"No miracles", he told a press conference (via United's official website). They seem to have learned not to sign players whom Bayern Munich are ready to offload after the Bastian Schweinsteiger failure.

"When I listen, when I read - not much but sometimes I do - it is hard to believe that we finished second", Jose said, "because you are capable of making people that finish second look like they were relegated, and people who win nothing and finish below us look like serial winners".

"I have my players and I like my players", Mourinho said. You have to try your best to get points and even with the difficulties that we had with our pre-season, now I don't think is the time to be speaking about that.
