Sevilla qualified for Sunday's match as last season's Copa del Rey runners-up, after Barcelona won the league and cup double.

The Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla is a game of particular significance for Leo Messi: if the new Barcelona captain finds himself on the winning side in Tangiers he will become the most successful player in Camp Nou history by lifting a 33 career trophy with the club.

That was after Luis Muriel had powered his way through the Barca defence.

The goal was awarded once VAR had overruled an initial offside decision.

But it was Dembele who sealed the game when he lashed a shot home from 20 yards via the underside of the crossbar in the 79th minute.

Gerard Pique, who announced his worldwide retirement with Spain on Saturday, levelled three minutes before the interval for Barcelona after he was fastest to respond to a loose ball following a Messi free-kick.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) said on Saturday that there would be no restrictions on players from outside the European Union for the Supercup, despite only three being allowed in squads for league matches.

In a series of firsts for the Super Cup, the game will be played outside Spain, in Tangier, just across the Strait of Gibraltar.

"It was a really hard game because we conceded very early and we had to fight back. It's good to win because it gives you belief in what you are doing and it allows you to start the season on the front foot". However, Sevilla squandered a golden chance to send the match into extra-time when Wissam Ben Yedder missed a last-minute penalty.

"He (Dembele) is a player with great qualities and today has left us with something to be happy about in a hard match", Valverde said.

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde was full of praise for Ousmane Dembele after his wonder-goal saw his side lift the Supercopa de Espana against Sevilla.
