Mayfield looks good in debut as Browns defeat Giants

In fact, it looked like they were back at Oklahoma and Penn State, respectively, competing for the Heisman Trophy.

Rookie sensation Baker Mayfield wrapped up his first performance early in the fourth quarter of the Brown's game against the New York Giants. Afterward, the Giants tried to put a positive spin on the evening, pointing to a run defense that allowed just 50 yards on 33 carries. Then he bounced it outside and gained the edge on flat-footed Browns CB Damarious Randall. The new 3-4 defence stopped the run but gave up too many big passing plays. For the Browns, first-overall pick Baker Mayfield could see his first National Football League snaps at quarterback. His first touchdown pass was threaded between defenders to David Njoku in the endzone. It started with him throwing a lovely back shoulder pass to Rashard Higgins. The drive included conversions on third and long and fourth and two.

Mayfield threw two touchdowns in two-plus quarters and Barkley ripped off a dazzling 39-yard run on the opening play from scrimmage as the Browns beat the Giants 20-10 on Thursday night.

It was all so familiar for Sooners fans and novel for Clevelanders. He hauled in a quick slant from Mayfield that he took 54 yards to the end zone to extend the Browns' lead in the second half. Mayfield completed 11-of-20 for 212 yards and two scores, while the Browns as a team completed 18-of-29 for 333 yards and three TDs.

With the handoff from quarterback Eli Manning, Barkley took a few steps back before cutting up the right side of the field and breaking three tackles along the way.

QB controversy in Cleveland?

Cleveland coach Hue Jackson said Mayfield's debut success didn't surprise him. Perhaps he's exclusively intending to compliment his new starting quarterback and express confidence in him as he leads a franchise that has only won one game over the past two seasons.
