The debate of whether breast is best has been going on for years but now the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that Midwives should check if mums are breastfeeding within an hour of birth.

Now in Ethiopia, only 58 percent of mothers are aware of the significance of breastfeeding for children till six months without any additional food and water, she stated.

Messages around new mothers struggling with low milk supply, and toddlers needing "toddler milk" to supplement their diets are both unhelpful and untrue.

Another obstacle mothers face is discomfort during nursing.

Improving these practices, promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding through the baby-friendly hospital initiative as well as literacy and birth spacing, can help improve survival of children and mothers in the region. The theme of 2018 Breastfeeding Week, 'Breastfeeding: "Foundation for Life" is very fitting as breastfeeding especially exclusive breastfeeding is a win-win for all - baby, mother, family and society.

In the past decade, Karnataka has witnessed a 4.4% drop in children under the age of six months who are exclusively breastfed.

Anisur Rahman said the proportion of breastfeeding among children aged below six months has increased to 64 per cent in 2017, a sharp 23 per cent rise from 2008 when the ratio was 43. Very low exclusive breastfeeding rate has persisted among mothers in Nigeria with the National rate at 25% in 2014 (National Nutrition and Health Survey, 2014). In Egypt, only 19 per cent of babies born by C-section were breastfed in the first hour after birth, compared to 39 per cent of babies born by natural delivery. To boost exclusive breastfeeding, the Global Breastfeeding Advocacy Initiative, led by UNICEF and World Health Organization in collaboration with worldwide partners, are providing leadership to improve breastfeeding rates. The support in those tender moments helped me firmly hold on to breastfeeding for over six months. And these two are the leading causes of death in children under five years of age.
