Pellegrini disappointed with West Ham performance against Liverpool

The first step was thoroughly convincing.

That is some line-up of talent and while you would generally expect to have to play very well to win any Premier League game 4-0, Liverpool strolled to victory on a day when I felt they were well below their best.

Sturridge has proven time and time again that he is unable to cope with the demands of regular Premier League football but a new role as part of a Liverpool squad challenging for trophies could be the future for a player who remains a massive talent.

This was a seamless start to the season for Liverpool, who fielded two new additions in midfielder Naby Keita and the world's second-most expensive goalkeeper Alisson, and continued where they left off last term by dominating and demoralising their opponents.

"We made a good performance in general and day by day we will get better and better", he said. "We played at a high level". In the first half we had two or three clear chances to make it 1-1 and we conceded the second goal in the last second of the period. We defended as a team, compact, and tried to win every battle. "The most important thing was the three points and we got them".

"For us it was not flawless, but really good".

It succeeded early on, even though a breach always seemed as inevitable as the identity of the man who would kick-start Liverpool's new campaign.

"Nobody knows excatly how valuable or worthy a pre-season is".

Klopp is famous for employing a high-pressing system when out of possession, which requires all the players on the pitch to be relentless in their pursuit of the ball during transitions and helps make sure that Liverpool are hard to hit on the counter-attack.

Salah's goal was a far-post tap-in after Arthur Masuaku allowed him to run beyond him to convert Andrew Robertson's cross.

Sadio Mane netted in first-half stoppage time and eight minutes after the break.

West Ham couldn't live with the Reds' constant interchanging, Roberto Firmino dropping deep as Salah tucked in, Alexander-Arnold and Robertson bombing down the flanks whilst Keita and Milner shifted the ball around midfield with grace and elegance. Replays showed that Mane was offside when he received the ball, but the goal stood.

Whilst the four goals scored will stick out most for Liverpool fans, conceding zero at home is something they're hoping to become more accustomed to.

It encapsulated West Ham's Merseyside trip that their appeals for a reprieve went unanswered.

Daniel Sturridge completed the scoring in the 88th minute, 24 seconds after coming on for Salah.

"Absolutely a good performance, of course", Klopp told the "Daily Mail" after the game.
