Sony hails 500 million PlayStation sales with limited edition PS4 Pro

The PlayStation 4 Pro 500 Million Limited Edition is due to release on August 24 and will be available for £449.99 ($499.99) - other pricing TBC.

Sony has today announced that 500 million PlayStations have been sold worldwide and to celebrate, they're doing something special.

The original PlayStation console first launched in 1994 and since then Sony has sold a staggering 525.3 million consoles, including the PlayStations 2 to 4 and the PSP and PS Vita portables. The limited console is a translucent blue color with sleek copper accents that brings to mind the streak of translucent consoles, controllers, and handhelds that graced the '90s and early '00s.

Each individual console will also be engraved with a unique number.

Each system will have a commemorative copper plate on its front with its limited edition serial number etched on.

However, if you already own a PS4 Pro and you just want the controller, you're in luck. There's even a 500 Million Limited Edition Gold Wireless Headset featuring the same dark blue translucent design going for $99.99.

Sony said that certain "extra special" units will also pop up for lucky buyers with serial numbers like 09995 (the U.S. launch date of the first PlayStation) and 01013, representing the October 13, 2016 USA release date of the PS VR. Another serial number to keep an eye out for is 01013, which is the USA launch date of PSVR. But hey, if anyone's willing to toss me $500, I'll be happy to pick up one and show it off for you. In addition, a 500 Million Limited Edition DualShock 4 and a 500 Million Limited Edition Gold Wireless Headset will also be available. They'll also be available from August 24, again in limited numbers.
