Triple Major victor Brooks Koepka shrugs off fan apathy

Triple Major victor Brooks Koepka shrugs off fan apathy

The 42-year-old was named as a Ryder Cup vice captain by Furyk but he now looks set to make the team as a player.

"This eight is exciting for any captain", said Furyk.

Tellingly, Furyk then added: "Even as a player he's been a vice captain, always has been".

He never wavered, closing with a four-under 66 to win his second Major of the year and his third in 14 months.

"I know his number one goal this year was to get healthy".

Woods' hopes looked over after just two holes after he followed an opening-hole bogey with a double-bogey at the next, only for him to recover and card a level-par 70 on Thursday and back it up with a successive 66s.

Overlooked going into the US Open after missing the Masters with a left wrist injury, Koepka had been all but written off at Shinnecock after flirting with the cut line when he was 7-over par during the second round. He jumped from 20th to 11th in the standings.

"I had to kind of figure this out on my own, and it's been really hard, it's a lot harder than people think", Woods said after the event, according to ESPN.

"I can think of plenty of people along the way telling me I'll be nothing, working at McDonald's", Koepka told reporters Tuesday at Bellerive. I realize Tiger is a story. You want the very best players that you have the trust in as well. He is joined in the Ryder Cup squad by Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson.

The ratings were the highest for the PGA Championship's final round since 2009. Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson, who ranked ninth and 10th, missed the cut. "Going from that to even being able to play this year to this, it's absolutely mind blowing", Koepka said.

The sixth and 10th holes played as the joint toughest in the final round, the par-three sixth to an average of 3.35 and the par-four 10th to an average of 4.35.

"We have some big tournaments coming home", Furyk said.

Throughout the week, golfers continuously touted Bellerive as one of the most crowded golf courses they'd played on, with some of the most passionate fans. "I need to continue doing that, because once you're satisfied, you're only going to go downhill".

"He's the guy who can just will himself to play good golf", Furyk told BBC Sport.

The Ryder Cup takes place at Le Golf National outside Paris, France, from September 28-30.

"I still think you want to be able to weave the four captain's picks into the framework of the eight that we have, but you could pick two guys who paired very well as captain's picks as well", Furyk said.

Since it was established in 1916 it has been played in nine different months and for two lengthy stretches from 1959-70 and 1972-2018 rounded off the major season.

Woods has long battled the hustle and bustle (and cell phones) and of the huge galleries he draws - at the British Open in July a fan yelled out as Woods hit his tee shot on the 72nd hole - but he has not become immune to them.

"He priceless, to be honest with you", Furyk said.

"He's been really a big help to our captains in both 2016 and 2017 from a strategy perspective and also really serving on the golf course". The oppressive heat of American summers all but forces superintendents managing bent grass greens to overwater greens in order for the grass to survive and the resulting effect means players are hitting irons on to a surface the equivalent of a basket of wet washing.
