The child experienced neurological symptoms and was hospitalized.

Three mosquito pools have tested positive for the West Nile Virus, the Portsmouth City Health Department reports. Officials did not release any details as to the person's sex or age.

The health department said there has been a large increase of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus across the county, which is happening earlier this summer compared to prior years.

Last week, Maryland health officials reported the first confirmed case of a West Nile-infected adult in that state.

"Public Health thanks the community for being diligent in removing standing water and eliminating the places where mosquitoes can breed", Callanan said.

In Fairfax County, you can request the health department conduct a mosquito inspection of your yard by calling (703) 246-8931.

The number of confirmed infections can vary from year to year.

In Maryland, there were five reported cases of West Nile previous year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were no reported cases of West Nile in the county past year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people infected with the virus may not show any symptoms but some may experience fever along with body aches, joint pain, headaches, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Most people make a full recovery over weeks or months, officials said, but severe cases can lead to meningitis, paralysis and even death, according to experts.

Those most at risk for serious complications are people older than 50 and people with suppressed immune systems.

Since mosquitoes are attracted to standing water, residents are also advised to clean or empty out items that may hold water such as old tires, buckets, planters, toys, birdbaths, flowerpots, tarps, trash containers, downspout extensions and other containers to stop mosquitoes from breeding on your property.
