United Kingdom to seek extradition of Russians in Skripal case: Guardian

The UK is poised to ask Russian Federation to extradite suspects over the nerve agent poisoning in Salisbury, according to reports.

The decision, which the Russian government is expected to reject, is the culmination of an investigation by British authorities into the entry, activity and departure of the two Russian suspects.

Any extradition request is likely to be rejected by Russian Federation.

The Guardian quoted a Whitehall source as saying: "The CPS has been asked to prepare extradition requests and we understand they are ready to go".

The move is likely to continue the downward spiral of United Kingdom and Kremlin relations after a former Russian military intelligence colonel, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter, Yulia, were found unconscious in Salisbury from exposure to the Novichok nerve agent in March.

The move was reciprocated by Moscow.

Months later, a 44-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man, both British nationals, were also found poisoned, probably after accidentally coming into contact with a container used in the attack on the Skripals.

Dawn Sturgess subsequently died from Novichok near Salisbury.

They say the Crown Prosecution has prepared an extradition request and it is ready to file, according to sources from Whitehall.

In 2007, Putin rejected a similar extradition request for two Russians tied to the high-profile 2006 assassination of former FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko. It's nearly a rerun of the situation. Moscow refused to extradite Russians in accordance with the Constitution. The diplomatic dispute escalated shortly after the Skipals' poisoning, with Britain and its allies expelling more than a hundred Russian diplomats in protest.

Her partner, Charlie Rowley, was left seriously ill from the effects of the nerve agent but was discharged from hospital.

Police think the novichok was sprayed or smeared on their front doorknob with a perfume bottle.
