Warnings over Genoa bridge collapse made since 2012

It partially collapsed in 1964 after being hit by an oil tanker, in in accident which killed seven people just two years after the bridge finished.

The Interstate 35W bridge, whose collapse into the MS river killed 13 people, was also built in the 1960s, though federal investigators ultimately concluded that poor maintenance wasn't the main cause of the disaster.

As cranes moved in to shift truck-sized chunks of broken concrete, hundreds of firefighters searched for survivors, while public shock turned to anger over the state of the 1.2 km-long bridge, completed in 1967 and refurbished two years ago. At least two people were missing.

The Morandi bridge, built in the 1960s, stands on the A10 toll motorway, an important conduit for goods traffic from local ports which also serves the Italian Riviera and south-east coast of France.

"There are so many schools, hospitals, railways, rivers, and motorways that need maintenance, but often we're told we can't spend money due to European constraints on our budget, which take our deficit and our GDP into account, amongst other things", he said.

"I'm following with the utmost apprehension what is happening in Genoa and what looks like it could be an enormous tragedy", Transport and Infrastructure Minister Danilo Toninelli said on Twitter.

"I was driving along the bridge, and at a certain point, I saw the road in front of me collapse, and I went down with the auto", Mr Capello told TV news channel Sky TG24.

Transport minister Danilo Toninelli and co-deputy Prime Minister Luigi di Maio called for managers of Autostrade per l'italia - which runs Italy's toll highways network and is part of the company Atlantia - to resign. I don't know how my auto wasn't crushed. "Autostrade had to do the maintenance and did not do it".

Salvini said Wednesday that the Fire Brigade had extracted the final body after working through the night.

Conte said it had been responsible for ensuring safety on the bridge and the government would not await the outcome of a current criminal investigation into the disaster before taking action.

Autostrade insisted that Genoa's Morandi bridge had been "monitored ... every three months".

Emergency workers in the Italian city of Genoa were still at work on Wednesday, clearing wrecked vehicles and debris following the deadly collapse of a major road bridge.

"We have one of the biggest dealers in Europe that tells us that the bridge was safe and there was [no way] to imagine the collapse", Di Maio wrote.

Genoa is a port city located in the Liguria region of Italy.

The incident is the latest in a string of bridge collapses in Italy, a country prone to damage from seismic activity but where infrastructure generally is showing the effects of a faltering economy. "We've already saved a dozen people from under the rubble", said rescue official Emanuele Giffi.

"I feel blessed, that's it", Mr Goccia said.

Adding to initial design criticism by University of Genoa professor Antonio Brencich, architect Diego Zoppi said the risk of collapse had been underestimated.

The Guardian reports that "Restructuring work on the bridge was carried out in 2016".

Rescue teams continue to search through the rubble on August 16th at the site of the Morandi Bridge collapse.
