California gunman kills five in mass shooting

A man went on a shooting rampage in California on Wednesday, killing five people including his wife, before taking his own life.

The man killed his wife and a man at a trucking company in Bakersfield, California, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said.

The husband shot and killed his wife and the man.

He then shot both of them before turning the gun on someone who rushed to the scene, police said.

Three people were killed there and the shooter, armed with a large calibre handgun, fled.

He then killed another man nearby the company and two people later at a residence.

He then carjacked a woman who was driving her child.

When deputies pulled the suspect over, the man shot himself in the chest.

Investigators say the gunman later drove to a home, where he killed two other people.

About 30 people saw the shootings and were being interviewed by deputies, Mr Youngblood said.

Sheriff's officials said there were multiple crime scenes, including at the trucking business and near a gun seller called Bear Mountain Sports.

The Kern County Sheriff's Office held a press conference Wednesday night and said the investigation is ongoing, but investigators are confident the shootings are connected.

The Sheriff's Department said the shootings took only a short period of time and were not random. "This is highly unusual", he said.

Authorities did not release the name of the suspect or victims.

"What we are trying to do is find out why this started and why so many players (are) involved, and the connection", Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood told a group of reporters. "Our entire community, with one heavy heart, is praying for the victims and their families", he wrote.
