Donald Trump scuppers one million Alibaba jobs in US

Ma met US President Donald Trump a year ago and promised to create a million US jobs linked to small businesses selling items on Alibaba platforms.

Previously, Ma promised a large expansion in the USA entirely contingent on trade relations remaining normalized.

He said that trade is not a weapon and shouldn't be used for wars.

"Short term, business communities in China, U.S., Europe will all be in trouble", Ma said on Tuesday, during a speech at Alibaba's investor day in Hangzhou.

Tensions have escalated this week as China vowed to retaliate against USA plans to levy tariffs on about $200 billion in Chinese goods. "We have visited a lot of countries and regions and find opportunities are everywhere".

Alibaba has always worked toward the goal of "making doing business easy and fun".

Ma, the cofounder of Alibaba, announced in early September that he would step down from his role as chairman at the end of the year to focus on philanthropy. When commenting about his coming retirement, Ma says he has been prepared for it for over 10 years.

The alliance - unveiled during Computing Conference 2018 - represents a key boost for Alibaba Cloud in its quest to gain customer credibility across the globe, with a joint taskforce deployed to target businesses of all sizes.

But in an interview published late Wednesday by China's official news agency, Xinhua, Ma said the waves of new tariffs imposed by Washington and Beijing in recent months have undermined the plan. He will hand the reins of his empire to current CEO Daniel Zhang. "This kind of thing happens, it's very natural".

"I believe it will be a time of progress for both the company and myself", Ma said on Tuesday. "Otherwise we will never choose the name Alibaba, we'd choose another insane Chinese name that people don't understand".

"The collaboration shows the positive impact that technology, including cloud computing, AI and IoT, can have on the planet and wildlife protection", said the President of Alibaba Cloud Simon Hu.
