EPL: Alderweireld speaks on joining Manchester United

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld's claims he always wanted to stay put at the club have been met with a mixed response.

Spurs do have an option to extend Alderweireld's current deal by a further year, although that would see a £25m release clause inserted into the contract. The Belgian worldwide has iterated that he never wanted to leave Tottenham, and that the rumours suggesting the same were untrue.

Jose Mourinho's Manchester United were known to be tracking the Belgium centre-back and had prepared a hefty package deal for him.

Alderweireld has insisted he had no interest in joining Manchester United.

Sources told ESPN FC that United made a £50 million bid for Alderweireld, £20m less than Tottenham wanted, and negotiations over the Belgium global continued until the Premier League transfer deadline on August 9.

'Everyone was saying everywhere that I absolutely wanted to leave Tottenham, ' he said.

"That's not true. This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me".

The centre-back was quoted as saying by Belgian daily Het Nieuwsblad: "That is a victory for me". So, I had to battle to get my place back in the team. "Everything on my future that has been said by the press is not correct".

"The World Cup was good and I meant to work hard and show my qualities". However, the North Londoners aren't out of the woods yet, as far as the Belgian international's future is concerned.

Given the fact that £25 million would be considered a bargain for a defender as talented as Alderweireld in the current transfer climate, United could face some stiff competition if they return with a bid for him next summer. And so, Manchester United could still come back for the Belgian global, although his words suggest he is committed to Tottenham.
