Erik Karlsson traded to the San Jose Sharks

Normally, a trade between teams out of Colorado's division and not involving them would just be fun fodder for dissecting the deal but this one actually has a chance to have a significant impact on the Avalanche. Nine years ago on September 12, 2009, the Senators dealt winger Dany Heatley to the Sharks on the first day of camp. However, around here the most important job I have is to chase down rumors.so when Karlsson starts to heat up I always feel I owe it to all of you to focus on rumors.I know that is why you come here and I never take that for granted. "I wish we were standing here during different circumstances". "And even though you have heard a lot of things about this could be possible, I think that you can't really prepare for it, for any of it, so, it's sad".

"It's very unfortunate that I'm going to have to move on professionally", Karlsson said.

More controversy bubbled to the surface in May when former captain and franchise icon Daniel Alfredsson, who left his role with Ottawa as a senior adviser the previous summer, was quoted saying he hopes the team gets a new owner.

Ottawa Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson pauses on the ice during the second period of a game against the Arizona Coyotes in Glendale, Ariz., on March, 3, 2018.

Karlsson, whose contract expires at the end of this season, doesn't quite see it that way. "Even though there's been a lot of noise for nearly a year now, I never thought in my wildest imagination I was going to leave this place". Dorion stated during town hall meetings with seasons ticket holders in April that he would offer Karlsson a long-term contract extension on July 1 and the club did.

The 28-year-old has won two Norris Trophies and has led Ottawa to within a goal of the Stanley Cup Final, ultimately losing in overtime of Game 7 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2017.

Karlsson had spent his entire career with the Senators since being drafted by the organization in 2008, 15th overall. The Senators also will receive a first-rounder in 2021 or 2022 if Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster this season.

The decision to trade Karlsson signals that the organization is entering a full rebuild, and the captain may not be the last player out of the door before the work here is completed for next season.
