Lincoln - Human West Nile virus cases continue to be reported in Nebraska above what is expected for this time of year, particularly from the Douglas County and Sarpy/Cass counties health jurisdictions. More severe symptoms include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. While there is no specific treatment for West Nile virus, patients are treated with supportive therapy as needed.

The elderly are more at risk of getting sick because their immune system is often weaker.

As of September 4, 2018, a total of 45 states and the District of Columbia have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes in 2018. "Neighboring states have reported cases in humans, including one in ME and four in MA".

"School has started, Halloween is just around the corner and some people are even thinking about the holidays, but mosquitoes are still thriving and biting", Department of Public Health Deputy Epidemiologist Ann Garvey said in a prepared statement. That includes using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and long trousers.

"There is no discernible trend", said Dr. Tomarken.

On Thursday, Governor Sununu and the Department of Health and Human Services announced that 30 municipalities in southern New Hampshire are at increased risk of West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

Locally, the health unit's surveillance program has shown that West Nile virus activity remains within local and historical norms.
