Josh Gordon's troubled tenure with the Cleveland Browns has ended.

"This afternoon we informed Josh Gordon and his representatives that we are going to release him on Monday", general manager John Dorsey released in a statement.

Cleveland's star wide receiver, who appeared in his first season opener since 2012 last week, will not play in Sunday's game at New Orleans because of a hamstring injury.

Josh Gordon's season is already off course.

Gordon's injury came as a surprise after he practiced all week and was not listed on the team's injury report.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport explained that Gordon reported to the team facility on Saturday with some hamstring soreness, and Browns medical staffers made a decision to keep him out of this week's game as a precaution.

Gordon played in last week's season opener against Pittsburgh, his first appearance in a Week 1 game since 2012, when he was a rookie.

"The 6'3" wideout hauled in one reception on Sunday, a 17-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Tyrod Taylor. The 27-year-old was slowed by a hamstring issue after he reported late to training camp while missing three weeks to receive counselling and treatment for alcohol and drug dependence.

Gordon played 78 percent of the team's offensive snaps in the opening-week tie against the Steelers, even drawing an unexpected start that coach Hue Jackson called a "mistake" due to miscommunication with his offensive coordinator.

Jackson refused to elaborate on the situation this week, saying he and the coaching staff wanted to "move on".
