People are encouraged to report dead birds and squirrels online at www.westnile.ca.gov or by calling 1-877-WNV-BIRD (1-877-968-2473). Some common mosquito habitats include: tires, buckets, cans, bottles, plastic containers, pet food containers and water dishes, planters and pots, including saucers and catch trays.

A mosquito sample collected in Vacaville has tested positive for the West Nile virus, according a press release from Solano County. Symptoms on the serious side may include a stiff neck, vision problems, body tremors, mental confusion, memory loss, and seizures. In many cases, a horse has to be euthanized when it contracts West Nile virus. In rare cases, more severe illness can occur.

People with milder illnesses typically recover on their own. A previously scheduled follow-up spray in the Milligan Road area of Knoxville will also take place Thursday, Sept. 20 between 8:30 p.m. and 2 a.m.

"West Nile we know is transmitted by mosquitos so the most important thing we could do is trying to limit our exposure to mosquitos and then also try and limit mosquito breeding", Duxbury said.

A complete schedule of mosquito sprayings is available at knoxcounty.org/health. This type of protection may be necessary for people who must work in areas where mosquitoes are present.

"The city will proactively continue to monitor this issue, and will keep residents informed of spray schedule plans as we move forward", said City Manager Anthony J. Snipes.

"We have a series of traps around town that monitor the mosquito population".

Clean leaves and debris from rain gutters regularly to ensure they are not clogged.
