Hurricane Florence Brings Life-Threatening Storm Surge To The Carolinas

Hurricane Florence is weakening slightly as it continues toward the Carolina coastal areas, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Wednesday, adding that life-threatening storm surge and rainfall were still expected.

It was forecast to make landfall mid-day Friday near Cape Fear, North Carolina, bringing up to 40 inches (1 meter) of rain, and storm surges as high as 13 feet (4 meters), the NHC said.

He said hurricane-force winds extend outward 80 miles from the centre of the storm and tropical storm-force winds extend almost 200 miles out.

According to the BBC, floodwaters may ride up to 13ft (4 metres) and Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator, Brock Long, explained: "So this is a very unsafe storm".

Up to 10 million people lie in the path of the storm, which still poses a risk to life and property, although it has been downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane.

But that, combined with the storm's slowing forward movement and heavy rains, had Gov. Roy Cooper warning of an impending disaster.

In the meantime, "treat the inland flooding just as seriously as you would the storm surge", said Clark.

The storm's centre was about 180km east of Wilmington, North Carolina, at 2pm local time (18:00 GMT) but tropical storm-strength winds and heavy rains already were hitting North Carolina's Outer Banks barrier islands.

Myrtle Beach, a SC beach resort, was virtually deserted with empty streets, boarded up storefronts and very little traffic. He also urged those outside of the evacuation zones to be prepared.

Homeless after losing her job at Walmart three months ago, 25-year-old Brittany Jones went to a storm shelter at a high school near Raleigh.

The city of Jacksonville's statement says people have been moved to the city's public safety center as officials work to find a more permanent shelter. "I've got four cats inside the house".

"But we can't replace us so we chose to come here".

As of late Thursday, the hurricane center said Florence was 95 kilometers southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, with top sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (90 mph).

A state of emergency has been declared in five coastal states - North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland and Virginia.

Almost 2,900 people are out of power in the Wampee and S.C. 9 area west of Little River, according to Horry Electric's website.

Not everybody was heeding orders to evacuate, however. "I'm not leaving him here".

"If you find yourself here [in rising floodwaters], you need to get out", she said. "I learned from the past to keep the ice in the washing machine". "I charged the batteries of my electronic devices, I have beers and video games".
