Mercedes-AMG A 35 Revealed with 306hp

The Mercedes-AMG A35 has been revealed, set to take on the likes of the Audi S3 and Volkswagen Golf R when it lands in Australia in the second half of next year.

The Formula One engine in the back of Mercedes' new Project One hypercar is so loud that its secret testing is no longer secret.

All that power is sent to both axles through a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission linking the engine to the 4Matic fully variable all-wheel-drive system. The C 300 d is also claimed to be the quickest diesel auto in the segment, with a 0-100 kmph sprint time of 5.9 seconds.

Serving as the new entry point into the AMG range, the A35 is the first in a two-pronged performance A-Class family, with the hotter 'A45' likely to follow in the coming months. However, unlike Hamilton's F1 vehicle, the Project One will be all-wheel-drive with additional electric motors powering the front two wheels in tandem with the engine and hybrid system powering the rear.

ESO modes include comfort, ESP Sport Handling, or ESP Off.

Additional styling changes are hard to spot, but the model has lightweight alloy wheels and side skirts which echo those found on the AMG Line variant.

Those tailpipes are connected to an AMG exhaust system with an automatically-controlled flap modulating the sound from "balanced to powerful" depending on drive mode.

The stiffened body structure supports a MacPherson strut front suspension. Further to that, a three-mode Adaptive Damping system will be available as an option.

Inside, the auto has special seats for support and the MBUX multimedia system.

A unique touch is the AMG menu with displays such as Warm-up, Set-up, G-Force and Engine Data, while an optional Track Pace package can record, display and compare more than 80 vehicle-specific parameters, including lap and sector times and acceleration figures.

Market launch starts with Western Europe in January 2019 (Mercedes-Benz South Africa has yet to announce timing for this new model's local introduction).
